LEARN HOW TO CROCHET THE FOUNDATION SINGLE CROCHET STITCH:

Keep reading to learn how to crochet the foundation single crochet stitch. This crochet stitches is one of the best ways of starting a crochet stitch. It works as a chain & a single crochet in the same stitch.

It’s not too complex, because the steps are quite simple. Once you understand the “theory” it’s quite easy.
You often find it called the chainless foundation single single crochet or the single crochet foundation chain.

If you have got one of my crochet patterns, you might wonder how it is done. The pattern always offers written text, but now I will give you a lot of additional explanations. Most importantly there is a video of how to crochet this stitch on the bottom.

Today I suggest that you learn the stitch & then you should use it in a project! You can make you own project, but on the bottom of this post I have also included all crochet patterns I’ve designed that are using the foundation single crochet stitch.

So let’s dive into the foundations single crochet tutorial.

MATERIALS YOU’LL NEED TO LEARN THE FOUNDATION SINGLE CROCHET STITCH:

Crochet Hook:

To follow this crochet tutorial you’ll need a crochet hook. When I crochet I usually use 2 types of crochet hooks. I’ve listed them below:

  • Knitpro – Symphonie Rose Crochet Hooks – My first choice as of now is the Symphonie Rose Crochet Hooks from KnitPro. They opened my world to wood hooks &  impressed me with their amazing lightness & how they feel in my hand. Even though they’re not padded, they never give me any strain while using them. I’ve only come across them in sets They are available here:
  • KnitPro – Waves Crochet Hooks – Are the crochet hooks I use almost as my favorite. They are padded hooks & are comfortable to crochet with.  They are a little heavier than wooden hooks, but the padded comfort is truly amazing. You can buy these both in sets & alone. They are available here:

Yarn:

You’re going to need some yarn to follow this crochet tutorial to learn a new crochet stitch. I really do love purchasing my yarn online. Here’s my top yarn resources:

HOW TO CROCHET THE FOUNDATION SINGLE CROCHET STITCH – WRITTEN DESCRIPTION:

Step 1: Ch 2 st.

Step 2: Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop. Yo and pull through first loop (making “chain”). Yo and pull through both loops on hook.

Step 3: Insert hook into prev “chain” you made (It should look like you go through a resemblance of a “normal” st, with 2 strands of yarn), pull up a loop, yo and pull through first loop (making “chain”). Yo and pull through both loops on hook.

Repeat step 3 until you’ve made enough stitches. *2nd ch in step 1 makes 1 st, step 2 makes 1 st & every time step 3 is repeated you make 1 st.

  1. This is the best video tutorial I’ve seen on how to do foundation chain sc. I learned to crochet from my mum at age 8 but I had stopped for over 20 years. I picked it up again after mum passed 3 1/2 yrs ago. So much has changed in 30 years and I’ve been playing catch up but I just haven’t been able to grasp this particular stitch, even watching videos so I just wouldn’t do it or use patterns where it was required. I am so glad you’re doing this holiday blog hop the way you are. It led me here and I feel confident I can use this now whenever I want. I hope you enjoy the holidays and stay safe and healthy in the coming New Year. Merry Christmas and thank you!

  2. I discovered foundation stitches over the past couple of years (and I’ve been crocheting for 40+ years). I love them. I think the first time I used them was for a hat.
