How To Crochet The Crochet Christmas Ball
This crochet Christmas Ball is crocheted from the bottom upwards, starting with a magic circle.
For the first few rounds you will increase the number of stitches you crochet, then you will keep the stitch count for a few rounds, finally you will decrease stitches until you have a round ball.
The stitches used to crochet the ball is front post double crochet and back post single crochet.
At the end you will crochet a hanging loop using the foundation single crochet.
Yarn For The Crochet Christmas Ball
To crochet this Christmas ball you are going to need some dk weight yarn.
The sample is made in cotton yarn, but you can also swap for other yarns you have leftover in your yarn stash from other projects.
Using a slightly thicker yarn, like worsted weight yarn will work well, but consider using a slightly bigger crochet hook size. If you use different yarns, you can make a unique result for your Christmas decor.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?
How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isnโt a helpful answer is it?
Well, Iโve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.
It will help you calculate exactly how much time youโll spend crocheting a project.
All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.
Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.ย

- Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!

For this crochet pattern you will need to know the half double crochet, front post double crochet, back post single crochet, single crochet stitches and foundation single crochet.
Front Post Double Crochet 2 Together
For this specific pattern the front post double crochet 2 together is done like this:
*pull up a loop around next FPdc*, repeat once, *yarn over, pull through 2*, repeat once.
Crochet Christmas Ball Instructions
Ball
Start with a magic circle, leave a long tail for finishing later.
Round 1: 16 hdc into the magic circle, slip stitch in 1st hdc (=16 st).
Donโt pull the magic circle tight right away, crochet a few rounds first.
Round 2: *FPdc 1 around next st, BPSc 1 around next st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st st (=16 st).
Round 3: *FPdc 2 around next st, BPSc 1 around next*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st st (=24 st).
Round 4: *FPdc 2 around next st, FPdc 1 around next st, BPSc 1 around next st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st st (=32 st).
Round 5: *FPdc 2 around next st, FPdc 1 around next 2 st, BPSc 1 around next st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st st (40 st).
Round 6: *FPdc around next 4 st, BPSc 1 around next st*, repat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st st (=40 st).
At this point itโs smart to pull the magic circle tight & weave in the yarn tail before continuing.
Round 7-11: Rep round 5.
Round 12: *FPdc around next 2 st, FPdc2tog around next 2 st, BPsc 1 around next st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st st (=32 st).
Round 13: *FPdc around next st, FPdc2tog around next 2 st, BPsc 1 around next st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st st (24 st).
Round 14: *FPdc2tog around next 2 st, BPsc 1 around next st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st st (=16 st).
Round 15: *FPdc 1 around next st, BPSc 1 around next st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st st (=16 st).
String
At this point you will still have a small opening in the ball, we will close that gap as we weave in ends.
FSC x stitches and slip stitch into the other side of the opening.
Finishing & Assembly
- Fasten off.
- Cut yarn and leave a long yarn tail to close the gap on the ball.
- Optionally: Fill the crocheted Christmas ball with polyester fiber fill. The tight stitches themselves will keep the shape of the ball well, but filling will keep the crocheted ball round easier.
- With a needle, thread the long yarn tail and cross cross to slowly close the gap in the ball.
- Weave in the yarn tail to finish.
