Back and Front Loop Single Crochet is one of my absolute favorite alterations of the single crochet stitch.
It gives texture without making things complex.
Personally I also feel I get into a flow when using this stitch, which makes it relaxing.
I’ve used this stitch for my Vivo Dress crochet pattern, Natare top and a few more mentioned in the list at the bottom of the page. All of those where crocheted in the round, not in rows as with this stitch tutorial.
Let’s dive into the stitch tutorial!

Techniques You Will Need
CROCHETING IN THE Back AND FRONT LOOP:
This means that you will not crochet through the whole stitch as usual. A typical stitch contains two loops. One in the front, nearest you, and another stitch in the back, furthest away from you. One is called the front loop (the one nearest you), the other one the back loop, the one furthest away from you.
For this stitch you will crochet both in the front & back loop.
Back AND FRONT LOOP SINGLE CROCHET STITCH TUTORIAL:
Ch a multiple of 2 + 1 for base chain.
Row 1: Sc 1 in 3rd ch from hook, sc 1 in each ch, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, *BLsc 1 in next st, FLsc 1 in next st*, repeat from *to* until you have 1 st left, sc 1 in next st, turn.
Repeat row 2 until project is desired size.
