How To Crochet The Zig Zag Granny Stitch Blanket
The Zig Zag Granny Stitch blanket is crocheted widthwise, starting with crocheting half granny squares.
On the first row you will work over each of these half granny squares to set up the granny ripple stitch pattern.
You will crochet with the right side facing you on each row, and you don’t have to weave in the ends, as you’ll add them to the fringe when you finish it up.
On the final rows, you’ll even out the edges by crocheting a few shorter rows to the final edge.
The last step is to create the fringe.
Yarn For The Zig Zag Granny Stitch Blanket
The yarn used in the sample crochet blanket is My Boshi – 50|50, which is a yarn blend with 50 % cotton and 50 % merino wool.
It uses 7 yarn colors, but you can easily adjust the the yarn you have and the colors you like to create a stunning granny ripple zigzag design blanket.

Half Granny Squares
Crochet 13 half granny squares.
All rows are crocheted with the right side facing.
Row 1 with CA: ch 5 (counts as base ch, ch 1), dc 3 in 1st ch (base ch), ch 2, dc 3 in base ch, ch 1, dc 1 in base ch, fasten off and cut yarn (=12 st).
Row 2 with CB: Make slip knot, dc 1 in top ch-3 (dc) from prev row, ch 1, dc 3 in first ch-sp, ch 1, dc 3 in corner ch-2-sp, ch 2, dc 3 in same corner ch-2-cp, ch 1, dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1, dc 1 in last st, fasten off and cut yarn (=20 st).

Main Blanket
All rows are crocheted with the right side facing.
When starting the rows, make a slipknot where the yarn tail is about 13 cm / 5.1 inches. Leave the same length when fastening off and cutting rows. That way all the yarn tails can be implemented into the fringe and you will not have to weave in all those yarn tails.
Work 1st row by working a continuous row into each of the half granny squares you made.
Row 1 with CE: Make slipknot, dc 1 in first ch-sp, ch 1, [*dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* two times, dc 3 in corner ch-2-sp, ch 2, dc 3 in same corner ch-2-cp, ch 1, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* 3 times**, sk last ch-sp on this half granny square and first ch-sp on next half granny square], repeat from [to] until you have worked into all the half granny squares ending last repeat at **, ch 1, dc 1 in last ch-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=433 st).
Row 2 with CF: Make slipknot, dc 1 in first ch-sp, ch 1, [*dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* two times, dc 3 in corner ch-2-sp, ch 2, dc 3 in same corner ch-2-cp, ch 1, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* 3 times**, sk 1 ch-sp], rep from [to] until end of row, ending last repeat at**, ch 1, dc 1 in last ch-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=433 st).
Repeat row 2 until you have crocheted 75 rows, changing colors on each row in alphabetical order.
Even Out Final Edge
Right Top Corner
Crochet this to even out the top right corner. Work first row into last row on main blanket instructions.
Row 1 with CB: Make slipknot, dc 1 in first ch-sp, ch 1, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* two times, dc 1 in corner ch-2-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=15 st).
Row 2 with CC: Make slipknot, dc 1 in first ch-sp, ch 1, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* once, dc 1 in last ch-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=11 st).
Row 3 with CD: Make slipknot, dc 1 in first ch-sp, ch 1, dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1, dc 1 in last ch-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=7 st).
Remove the “V”-s
Crochet this to even out or remove the V-s along the final edge of the blanket. Work first row into last row on main blanket instructions.
Repeat in all V-s along the edge.
Row 1 with CB: dc 1 in corner ch-2-cp, ch 1, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* 2 times, sk 1 ch-sp, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* 2 times, dc 1 in corner ch-2-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=27 st).
Row 2 with CC: dc 1 in first ch-sp, ch 1, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* once, sk 1 ch-sp, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* once, dc 1 last ch-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=19 st).

Left Top Corner
Crochet this to even out the top left corner. Work first row into last row on main blanket instructions.
Row 1 with CB: Make slipknot, dc 1 in corner ch-2-sp, ch 1, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* two times, dc 1 in last ch-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=15 st).
Row 2 with CC: Make slipknot, dc 1 in first ch-sp, ch 1, *dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from *to* once, dc 1 in last ch-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=11 st).
Row 3 with CD: Make slipknot, dc 1 in first ch-sp, ch 1, dc 3 in next ch-sp, ch 1, dc 1 in last ch-sp, fasten off and cut yarn (=7 st).
Fasten off & cut yarn.
Weave in ends along the final edge.
Finishing
When you’re finished crocheting it’s time to add the fringe.
- Cut two 26 cm / 10.2 inch strings of the yarn (same color as the row you tie it to).
- Use the crochet hook and pull it through the double crochet at the beginning/end of the row.
- Even the length out on the strings so they are approximately the same.
- Twist and pull the yarn end through (overhand knot).
- Repeat on all double crochet stitches at the beginning and end of each row.
- When you have repeated it on all ends, you may need to cut the length of all the fringe evenly. Measure it to about 9 cm / 3.5 inches and cut them one by one to size.
