How To Crochet The Mosaic Crochet Basket
The mosaic crochet basket is crocheted from the bottom up.
First you will crochet a flat circle using single crochet stitches to create the base.
The second yarn color is introduced as you start crocheting the sides (basket body). This is also when you start crocheting using the mosaic crochet technique and introduce the secondary color.
As you are working in rounds, you will not have to cut yarn on each round, as is often done on overlay mosaic crochet when working in rows.
You will decrease stitches at the final round, to help the basket keep it’s shape if used as a hanging crochet basket.
The last step is to crochet the hanging loop & weave in ends.
Yarn For The Mosaic Crochet Basket
For mosaic crochet, you will need to use two yarn colors to make the stitch pattern show up clearly. The more contrasting the colors are, the more prominent the stitch pattern will be.
For this crochet pattern the suggested yarn is Schachenmayr – Catania, it’s a 2 fine cotton yarn that comes in many different colors.
You can of curse substitute to other yarns & even try experimenting with different weights of yarn and crochet hook to something you have in your yarn stash.
If you change the yarn thickness and crochet hook, consider changing how many rounds you crochet for the base to adjust the overall size of the crochet basket.

- Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. - You can make the basket diameter bigger or smaller by adjusting how many rounds you crochet. Since the mosaic crochet stitch pattern for this basket is a multiple of 6, you can ad or reduce as many rounds as you need.

Techniques Used In The Crochet Pattern
Crocheting in the front and back loop
This means that you will not crochet through the whole stitch as usual. A typical stitch contains two loops. One in the front, nearest you, and another stitch in the back, furthest away from you. One is called the front loop (the one nearest you), the other one the back loop, the one furthest away from you.
For this pattern you will crochet double crochet stitches through the front loop & single crochet stitches (BLsc) through the back loop.
Mosaic Crochet
To crochet this pattern you will use the mosaic crochet technique, following these 3 simple rules:
- You will use color A & color B every other row.
- All single crochet stitches are worked in the back loop.
- All double crochet stitches (long double crochet/ Ldc) are worked 2 rounds below in the front loop & this front loop are always the same color as the one you’re working with.

- Read from the bottom up, from right to left.
- The yarn color for the round you are going to work are given to the left with letters A and B.

Cut color B.

Do not fasten off.
Hanging Loop
Ch 24 st, sl st in same st as sl st on round 53.
Fasten off & cut yarn.
Finishing & Assembly
Fasten threads & weave in ends.
