How To Crochet The Top Down Raglan Sweater
The easy classic raglan pullover is worked from the top down, without any sewing necessary.
To start the pattern you will chain stitches, and then crochet the yoke. The pattern is mostly made up of half double crochet stitches.
After you finish the yoke, you will crochet the body. It is made directly on the yoke. Then finally you will crochet the sleeves.

- Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. Stitches Used In The Raglan Pullover Crochet Pattern
Foundation Single Crochet Stitch (FSC):
Written description:
Step 1: Ch 2 st.
Step 2: Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop. Yo and pull through first loop (making “chain”). Yo and pull through both loops on hook.
Step 3: Insert hook into previous “chain” you made (It should look like you go through a resemblance of a “normal” st, with 2 strands of yarn), pull up a loop, yo and pull through first loop (making “chain”). Yo and pull through both loops on hook.
Repeat step 3 until you’ve made enough stitches. *2nd ch in step 1 makes 1 st, step 2 makes 1 st & every time step 3 is repeated you make 1 st.
Tutorial: Foundation Single Crochet Stitch
Crochet Together 2 Half Double Crochet Stitches (hdc2tog):
Used to decrease stitches.
Written description: Yarn over, draw up a loop from the next st, draw up a loop from the stitch after that, you have 4 loops on the hook, yo, pull through all loops on the hook.
Classic Raglan Pullover Instructions
Yoke
Note: All sizes begin with 66 stitches at neck. If you would like a wider neck, begin with 83 FSC, work round 1 with 82 stitches, then repeat round 2 until you reach the stitch count for your size.
FSC 66 st.
Round 1 (RS): Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), dc 1 in each st, sl st in top of starting ch-2, turn (=66 st).
Mark off corners like this:
- Count 12 st from last st made, place marker (PM) in that stitch.
- Count another 10 st, PM in that stitch.
- Count another 23 st, PM in that stitch.
- Count another 10 st, PM in that stitch.
- It should be 11 stitches left after that.
Round 2 (WS)*: Hdc directly in 1st st (no ch), *hdc 1 in each st until 1 st before marker, hdc 2 in next st, dc 1 in marked st, hdc 2 in next st*, repeat from *to* 3 more times, hdc 1 in each st until end of round, sl st in 1st hdc, turn (=74 st).
*: – When working into the marked stitch, move marker to the new stitch & keep moving it each round.
Repeat round 2 until you have crocheted 11 (15) 17 (21) 23 (27) 29 (33) 35 rounds. Stitch count will increase with 16 stitches each time you repeat round 4, ending with 146 (178) 194 (226) 242 (274) 290 (322) 338) st.
Fasten off & cut yarn.
Body
Continue where you left of on the yoke.
Round 1: Hdc directly in 1st st (no chain), hdc 1 in the next 22 (26) 28 (32) 34 (38) 40 (44) 46 st, FSC 4, sk 29 (37) 41 (49) 53 (61) 65 (73) 77 st (making armholes), hdc 1 in the next 44 (52) 56 (64) 68 (76) 80 (88) 92 st, FSC 4, sk 29 (37) 41 (49) 53 (61) 65 (73) 77 st (making armholes), hdc 1 in the next 22 (26) 28 (32) 34 (38) 40 (44) 46 st, sl st in 1st hdc turn (= 96 (112) 120 (136) 144 (160) 168 (184) 192 st).
Round 2: Hdc directly in 1st st (no chain), hdc 1 in each st, sl st in 1st hdc, turn (= 96 (112) 120 (136) 144 (160) 168 (184) 192 st).
Round 3 – 44: Repeat round 2.
Fasten off & cut yarn.
Sleeves
Repeat 2 times to make 2 sleeves.
Attach yarn with RS facing in 3rd FSC under the arm made on the first round of body.
Only size XS (S) M:
Round 1: Hdc directly in 1st st (no chain), hdc 1 in each st from prev round, sl st in 1st hdc, turn (= 33 (41) 45 st).
Round 2: Rep round 1.
Round 3: Hdc2tog directly in 1st & 2nd st (no chain), hdc 1 in each st until you have 2 st left, hdc2tog in the last 2 st, sl st in 1st hdc, turn (= 31 (39) 43 st).
Round 4 – 15 (27) 30: Repeat rounds 1-3, 4 (8) 9 more times.
Stitch count will continue decreasing by 2 every third round, starting with 31 (39) 43 stitches on round 3 & decreasing to 23 (23) 25 stitches on round 15 (27) 30.
Round 16 (28) 31 – 44: Rep round 1 (=23 (23) 25 st).
Only size (L) XL (2XL):
Round 1: Hdc directly in 1st st (no chain), hdc 1 in each st from prev round, sl st in 1st hdc, turn (= (53) 57 (65) st).
Round 2: Hdc2tog directly in 1st & 2nd st (no chain), hdc 1 in each st until you have 2 st left, hdc2tog in the last 2 st, sl st in 1st hdc, turn (= (51) 55 (63) st).
Round 3 – (28) 30 (36): Repeat rounds 1-2, (13) 14 (17) more times.
Stitch count will continue decreasing by 2 every second round, starting with (51) 55 (63) stitches on round 2 & decreasing to (25) 27 (29) stitches on round (28) 30 (36).
Round (29) 31 (37) – 44: Rep round 1 (= (25) 27 (29) st).
Only size 3XL (4XL) 5XL:
Round 1: Hdc2tog directly in 1st & 2nd st (no chain), hdc 1 in each st until you have 2 st left, hdc2tog in the last 2 st, sl st in 1st hdc, turn (= 69 (77) 81 st).
Round 2 – 4 (6) 10 : Rep round 1.
Stitch count will continue to decrease by 2 every round, starting with 69 (77) 81 stitches on round 1 & decreasing to 61 (65) 61 stitches on round 4 (6) 10.
Round 5 (7) 11: Hdc directly in 1st st (no chain), hdc 1 in each st from prev round, sl st in 1st hdc, turn (= (61) 65 (61) st).
Round 6 (8) 12 – 37 (41) 41: Repeat round 1 and 5 (7) 11 every other round, 16 (17) 15 times.
Stitch count will continue decreasing by 2 every second round, starting with 61 (65) 61 stitches on round 5 (7) 11 & decreasing to 29 (31) 31 stitches on round 37 (41) 41.
Round 38 (42) 42 – 44: Rep round 5 (7) 11 (=29 (31) 31 st).
Fasten off & cut yarn.
