How To Crochet The Crochet Makeup Bag

The interlocking crochet makeup bag is crocheted using the interlocking crochet technique, which is also known as double filet crochet.

The stitches you need to know is theย double crochet stitchย andย chain stitches. The double crochet stitches are worked in the front or in the back, to interlock the two yarn color pieces together.

Whatโ€™s so great about this technique is that you get a reversible fabric, with two different patterns on each side. That means you can choose which pattern you prefer on the outside of your crochet makeup bag before you sew it together.

You will work each row twice, starting with the first color and then you will work the second color before you turn your work.

After crocheting a rectangle, the crochet makeup bag is sewn together using whip stitches & then snap fasteners are attached.

Yarn For The Interlocking Crochet Makeup Bag

For this crochet pattern the sample was made in Rico Designs, Essentials Organic Cotton DK in 2 colors.

Itโ€™s a 3 light yarn, but you can easily substitute for any other cotton yarn & even consider worsted weight yarn if thatโ€™s what you have available. The gauge may not match, but you can always make it narrower by starting with fewer stitches.

Pick two contrasting colors to make the stitch pattern pop.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isnโ€™t a helpful answer is it?

Well, Iโ€™ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time youโ€™ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.ย

Techniques Used In The Crochet Pattern

Interlocking Crochet

This crochet pattern uses the interlocking crochet technique, also known as the double mesh technique.

This means you will work each row 2 times, first with color A, then with color B.

With this technique you create a two sided project, that can show different patterning on each side.

The crochet stitches are simple, double crochet, chain one and skip one stitch. However, you will either work the double crochet in front (dcif) or double crochet in the back (dcib).

That simply means that you will either go from the front of the work to crochet the double crochet, or reach behind to crochet the double crochet, interlocking the crocheted mesh together as you go.

You will only turn your work after working each row with both colors.
