The Yarn

The Spring Sprig Bag is made with Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton. It is a worsted-weight (#4), mercerized 100% natural fiber yarn. I chose this yarn because the color options are simply amazing and the yarn is perfect for making garments, kitchen and home accessories and other items you can think of! I used two neutral colors (Taupe and Ecru) for this design but you are welcome to use any other worsted weight (#4) cotton yarn you prefer. You may use one color or multi-color in making this bag, the choice is yours!

THE PATTERN NAME

This simple textured pattern was created because of my passion to design and make crocheted bags. You may be wondering about where I got the name. It’s not always easy for me to name my design pattern. For this one though, well, I have this book called Crochet Stitch Dictionary which I bought last year. I’ve been learning different stitches from this book and one of those is the Sprig stitch pattern. It is worked entirely in chains and single crochet stitches. The texture it creates is simply amazing and I fell in love with it. So, that’s where I got the name for this pattern. I added the word “Spring” because it is going to be released in Springtime!

The Spring Sprig Bag is great for everyday use. It is also perfect as a project bag for your yarny projects but because of its stretchy characteristic, I recommend not using it to contain heavy stuff.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer, is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

About The Pattern

This market bag pattern is a perfect project for a confident beginner. It is worked from the bottom (base) up and uses basic crochet stitches. The base and top part of this bag are worked in the round (in a spiral). The main body part, on the other hand, though it is still worked in the round after crocheting the last stitch of the round, you have to slip stitch it into the very first stitch of that same round to join and then you will need to chain 1 to get the height of the next stitch.

I’ve also included an option to add a detachable shoulder strap which you have the choice of crocheting your own strap or using a leather one.

Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measures at least 5 x 5 cm / 2 x 2 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger (more details).
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • This pattern is written for 1 size, however, you can adjust the size of your bag to your desired measurement. You can add or deduct the number of your foundation chains. Please note that the body pattern stitch is a stitch multiple of 4.
  • At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.
