Today I’ll be sharing the pattern for my Sandy Crossbody Tote.  I was inspired to design this tote because I often find myself needing a bag to toss basic essential into when I venture out with my kiddos, but don’t need to bring my full on purse (it’s a doozy of a purse and weighs a ton).  The totes I always seemed to grab were those reusable shopping totes.  Now, those totes worked well enough, but they were missing two things to make them the perfect toss-in-and-carry-it-all type of tote… a crossbody strap, and STYLE.

The Yarn

For this project I used Drops Safran in 10 rainbow inspired colors: white (17), cerise (55), peach (12), orange (28), strong yellow (11), yellow (10), lime (31), green (04), denim blue (06), and dark heather (15).*  Drops has about 30 colors in all to choose from, including brights, pastels, and neutrals.  How great would this tote look worked up in your favorite color striping pattern, or in a solid neutral?!?!  I love this yarn for this project because the 100% cotton fiber gives the bag a bit of structure as well as making it easily washable.

*Because color names for Drops Safran can vary depending on the retailer, I included the color number codes in parenthesis after the color names.

THE PERFECT ON-THE-GO STYLISH TOTE

The Sandy Crossbody Tote is the perfect on-the-go stylish tote.  Throw a couple of water bottles and a pair of sunglasses in it for a quick visit to the park with your kiddos.  Throw your wallet and coupons in it for a jaunt up to the craft store.  Toss in a book and a bottle of sunscreen and hit the beach.

This tote would even make a beautiful date night bag.  If you are worried about small bits like lipstick or other odds and ends, then grab a stylish little zipper pouch to put those little bits in and toss it into your Sandy Crossbody Tote.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • Chains (including turning chains) do count as stitches.
  • Ch1 means to crochet 1 chain. Ch-1 is referring to a previously mentioned ch1.
  • Stitches in parenthesis ( ) are all worked in the same stitch.
  • If you are crocheting the same striping pattern as me, then you will crochet the foundation chain with white as well as the first three rows. Then, switch colors every three rows.
  • At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.

Size & Measurements

Width: 14.5 inches tall

Height: 11.5 inches wide

Size Adjustments

  • To adjust the height of the bag, chain any multiple of 2 plus 1.  Use a starting chain greater than 133 to make the bag deeper.  Use a starting chain less that 133 to make the bag more shallow.
  • To adjust the width of the bag, repeat rows 2 -5 more for a wider bag, less for a slimmer bag.

Abbreviations

We try our best to include all crochet abbreviations in the list above for the crochet pattern, but sometimes we may forget one or two.

Learn more about crochet abbreviations & find a complete list on our Crochet Abbreviations & Terms post.

Bag Body

With 4mm hook, ch 133.

Row 1: HDC in 3rd ch from hook, *sk 1 ch, (HDC, ch1, HDC) in next ch. Repeat from * until you have 2 chains remaining, then sk 1 ch, and work 2HDC in the last ch, turn. = 196st)

Row 2: ch3 (counts as a DC), DC in same st as ch-3, *ch1, DC3TOG in ch-1 space from previous row. Repeat from * until no ch-1 spaces remain, then ch1 and work a DC2TOG in the top of the turning chain from the previous row, turn. (=131st)

Row 3: ch2 (counts as a HDC), *(HDC, ch1, HDC) in next ch-1 space, skip next st, repeat from * across, HDC in top of turning chain from previous row, turn. (=197st)

Row 4: ch3 (counts as a DC), *DC3TOG in ch-1 space from previous row, ch1, repeat from * across until one ch-1 space remains, then DC3TOG in the ch-1 space, DC in the top of the turning chain from the previous row, turn. (=131st)

Row 5: ch2 (counts as a HDC), HDC in the same st as the ch-2, *skip next st, (HDC, ch1, HDC) in next ch-1 space. Repeat from * across, work 2 HDC in top of turning chain from previous row. (=196st)

Rows 6 – 33: Repeat Rows 2 – 5.

Do not cut yarn or fasten off. Secure stitch on stitch marker and proceed to Finishing section.

Strap

With 3mm hook, ch 11. (Leave a long tail when making the slip knot to sew the bag strap to the bag body.)

Row 1: SC in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Rows 2 – 180 (or to preferred length): SC in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Maker Tip: When crocheting the strap, pause periodically and stretch the strap to measure length. The strap will stretch naturally with wear so this method for measuring strap length is recommended.

Cut yarn leaving a long tail to sew the bag strap to the bag body and fasten off.

Finishing

When you’re finished crocheting you have 2 parts:

1.-The Bag Body

2.-The Strap

Seaming

Lay bag flat with inside of the bag facing down and outside of the bag facing up. Inside and outside of bag is determined by your preference. I like the right side of the cluster stitches on the outside so I have mine laying so the right side of the cluster stitches are facing up.

Fold short edges together. The short edges will be the top opening of the tote.

Remove stitch marker from secured stitch.  Chain 1 and seam first side edge closed using slip stitches. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Join new yarn at the corner of the other side edge and seam closed using slip stitches. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Seam the strap to edges of the bag using your preferred seaming method.

Weave in all ends.
