What is the Back Loop Treble Crochet

The back loop treble crochet is one of the crochet in the back loop only stitches. These crochet stitches are a variation of basic stitches.

Crocheters often learn the regular treble crochet first. Then after learning the back loop stitch, they will often learn the front loop treble crochet stitch.

The back loop treble crochet is a variation of the normal treble crochet stitch where you insert the crochet hook into the back loop only, otherwise the steps are the same.

The steps of the Back Loop Treble Crochet Stitch:

  1. Yarn over 2 times
  2. Insert crochet hook into back loop only
  3. Pull up a loop
  4. Yarn over
  5. Pull through 2 loops on the crochet hook
  6. Yarn over
  7. Pull through 2 loops on the crochet hook
  8. Yarn over
  9. Pull through the last 2 loops on the crochet hook
  10. Repeat steps 1-9 to crochet another back loop treble crochet

Materials Needed

To crochet the back loop treble crochet you can use any crochet hook size and types of yarn.

Back Loop Treble Crochet Abbreviations

The back loop treble crochet is abbreviated BLtr or BLO tr in crochet patterns.

Learn more about crochet abbreviations & find a complete list on our Crochet Abbreviations & Terms post.

BLtr Chart Symbol

The back loop treble crochet chart symbol is related to the treble crochet (tr) stitch chart symbol.

It is a “T” with two lines across it representing the 2 yarn overs you do, like the regular treble crochet stitch. However, it also has a half circle below it pointing downwards representing that it’s worked into the back loop only.

It will be turned in the direction it will lay in your finished crochet work.
