What is the crochet fan stitch?
The fan stitch is a great double crochet stitch pattern combination with fans stacked on top of each other.
The stitches you will need to know is chains and double crochet stitches.
The pattern is a stitch multiple of 4 stitches.
Materials Needed
To crochet the fan stitch you can use any crochet hook size and weight yarn. If you’re following a crochet pattern, use the crochet hook and yarn suggested to get the correct gauge.
For this tutorial I used:
- Crochet hook size: 5.5 mm / US: I-9 / UK: 5
- We Crochet – Swish Worsted
- It’s a 4 medium / worsted yarn.

- Ch a multiple of 4 st, add 3 for base chain.
Row 1
- Row 1:Â dc 3 in 5th ch from hook (skipped stitches counts as 1 dc & sk 1 st), sk 1 st, *sl st in next st, sk 1 st, dc 3 in next st, sk 1 st*, repeat from *to* until you have 1 st left, dc 1 in last st, turn.Double crochet 3 stitches in 5th chain from hook.
- Skip 1 stitch and slip stitch in next stitch.
- Skip 1 stitch and double crochet 3 stitches in next stitch. Repeat *skip 1 stitch, slip stitch in next stitch, skip 1 stitch, double crochet 3 in next stitch* across.
- Ending with skip 1 stitch and double crochet in last stitch. This is how row 1 looks finished.
Row 2
- Row 2:Â ch 2 (counts as 2 st), sk 1 st, sl st in next st, *sk 1 st, dc 3 in sl st from prev row, sk 1 st, sl st in next st* repeat from *to* until you have 2 st left, ch 1, sk 1 st, sl st in next st, turn.Chain 2, counting as two stitches. Slip stitch in next stitch.
- Skip one stitch, double crochet 3 in next stitch.
- Skip one stitch, slip stitch in next stitch.Â
- Repeat: Skip one stitch, double crochet in next stitch, skip one stitch, slip stitch in next stitch across, until you have 2 stitches left.Â
- Chain 1, slip stitch in last stitch. This is how row 2 looks finished.
Row 3
- Row 3:Â ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), sk 1 st, dc 3 in sl st from prev row, *sk 1 st, sl st in next st, sk 1 st, dc 3 in sl st from prev row*, repeat from *to* until you have 2 st left, sk 1 st, dc 1 in last st, turn.Chain 2, skip one stitch, double crochet 3 in next stitch.
- Skip one stitch, double crochet 3 in next stitch.
- Repeat: Skip one stitch, slip stitch in next stitch in next stitch, skip one stitch, double crochet 3 in next stitch across, until you have 1 stitch left. Double crochet in last stitch.
- Repeat row 2-3 until project reach desired size.
