Crochet hats can be made as rectangles that are then assembled at the end.

How to Close the Top of a Crochet Hat

Step 1: Grab your unfinished crochet hat

You should have a finished crocheted tube to turn into a crochet hat with this tutorial. It can be a crocheted rectangle or a tube crocheted in rounds.

Step 2: Thread your needle

Thread your needle with a long yarn tail to start closing the top of your crochet hat.

Step 3: Start seaming every 1 inch / 2.5 cm

Insert needle from right side to wrong side and pull yarn through. Repeat approximately every 1 inch / 2.5 cm.

Step 4: Work about 4-6 stitches

Repeat inserting yarn and puling yarn through 4-6 times to close the top of your crochet hat.

Step 5: Pull yarn to cinch the first stitches closed

Pull the yarn tail gently to start closing the hat.

Step 6: Seam a few more stitches every 1 inch / 2.5 cm

Continue and seam a few more stitches every 1 inch / 2.5 cm. Then pull the yarn to close more of the crochet beanie.

Step 7: Pull hat closed

When you have seamed every 1 inch / 2.5 cm. Pull hat fully close the top of the crochet hat.

Step 8: Seam across to completely close beanie

With the needle. Seam closed to opposite side. Repeating a few time to fully close beanie.

Step 9: Avoid gap

Make sure you pull tight as you are seaming to avoid gaps as shown in the photo to truly close the top of your crochet hat.

Step 10: Seam through pointy end

Since you seamed every 1 inch / 2.5 cm, you will have a few “pointy ends”. Make sure that you seam through them as well to fully close the crochet hat.

Step 11: Pull the needle to the inside of the hat

Pull the needle through to weave in the yarn tail on the inside of the hat and fold.

Step 12: Weave in the yarn end

To finish off, weave in the yarn on the inside of the crochet beanie. Then cut yarn.

Step 13: Finished!

After you cut the yarn, make sure you have the right side out. The beanie is ready to be used.
