How To Make The Crochet Rectangle Top

This crochet pattern for a crochet summer top is made out of 2 rectangles. The crochet rectangle top is worked back and forth in rows with a lovely crochet stitch, starting at the bottom edge.

The stitch featured is a variation of the basic crochet stitch called half double crochet (hdc), but it is worked in the front loop only. The front loop half double crochet creates lovely ridges in the crochet fabric.

In the end the crochet top is whip stitched together at the sides and on the shoulders.

There is no right side or wrong side of this crochet fabric.

Yarn For The Crochet Rectangle Top

To crochet this easy crochet summer top you are going to need some yarn with the yarn weight, 2 fine yarn / sport yarn.

The sample for the crochet rectangle top is made in Setacotone Yarn from Lana Grossa, that is 50% silk and 50 % cotton, however it was a limited time yarn.

You can pick up any type of yarn for this ranging from cotton yarn, bamboo, merino to acrylic yarn. Pick a yarn color and fibres that will compliment your summer wardrobe and also feel comfortable to wear on hot summer days.

Customize Your Crochet Rectangle Top

With such a simple crochet pattern design, being just 2 rectangles, you can easily customize it.

One way to change it, is to make it into a crochet crop top pattern. The only thing you need to do is to reduce the number of rows you crochet.

Next, changing up the crochet stitches is also possible. Refer to the size chart to make sure you get the sizing right, but then swap for other stitches such as single crochet stitches (sc), double crochet stitch (dc) and so on.

Finally, make sure to give how much you want to change up the pattern a think before you purchase yarn, as customization often change the amount of yarn you will need.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Crochet Pattern Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • This pattern is written for 9 sizes, where the different sizes are given in parentheses like this: XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL (4XL) 5XL. If just one number is given, it applies to all sizes. I recommend that you highlight or circle the size you’re making before you begin to make the pattern easier to follow. Size adjustments are added under “Size & Measurements”.
  • At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.

  1. Pace the two rectangles on top of each other and whip stitch the shoulders together on each side, 7 (8) 9 (10) 11 (12) 13 (14) 15 st. The more stitches you sew together on each side, the smaller the neckline opening will be.
