How do you make a granny square basket?

You can crochet granny square baskets many ways. In this post I will show you a how to crochet a granny square basket where the granny square are decorative element added to a basic crochet basket. If you want to crochet a granny square basket including granny squares only, it’s important to note that it either have to be lined with fabric or you’ll have a basket with holes in it.

How do you crochet a stiff basket?

To crochet a basket that is stiff and doesn’t collapse, all you have to do is use a relatively thin crochet hook compared to the yarn. Either crochet tightly using the hook size suggested on the yarn label or go down a crochet hook size.

How To Crochet The Basket With Granny Squares


This crochet basket is made up of two main elements, the crocheted basked and the granny square. These are made and then assembled using whip stitches at the end.

The 8 granny squares are made in 4 different colors, following the How To Crochet A Granny Square Tutorial.

Then the basket is made from the center of the base in rounds. After that you work the sides in rounds until you reach the height of the storage basket.

Stitches used are the single crochet stitch, double crochet stitch and chains.

Yarn For The Crochet Basket


The yarn suggested for this crochet basket pattern is 24/7 cotton from Lion Brand Yarn, available in a wide range of colors.

It’s a sturdy cotton yarn, that can withstand washing well.

If you want to use a different yarn, you can of course substitute the yarn for wool or acrylic yarn. Such as Wool Ease by Lion Brand Yarn.

Round 1: Ch 3, dc 2 in 3rd ch (base ch) from hook, *ch 2, dc 3 in base ch*, rep from *to* 2 times, ch 2, sl st in top of ch from beginning of round (=20 st). Fasten off & cut yarn.  

Round 2: Make slip knot, dc 3 in any corner ch-2-sp, ch 2, *dc 3 in next corner ch-2-sp, ch 2, dc 3 in same corner ch-2-sp, ch 2*, rep from *to* 2 times, dc 3 in first corner ch-2-sp, ch 2, sl st in top of 1st dc from beg of round (=40 st). Fasten off & cut yarn.

Round 3: Make slip knot, dc 3 in any corner ch-2-sp, ch 2, *dc 3 in next ch-2-sp, ch 2, dc 3 in next corner ch-2-sp, ch 2, dc 3 in same corner ch-2-sp, ch 2*, rep from *to* 2 times, dc 3 in next ch-2-sp, ch 2, dc 3 in first corner ch-2-sp, ch 2, sl st in top of 1st dc from beg of round (=60 st). Fasten off & cut yarn.

Basket Base

Use color A.

Start with a magic circle. 

Round 1: 10 dc into the magic circle, pull tight, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=10 st). 

Round 2: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), dc 2 in each st, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=20 st). 

Round 3: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 1 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=30 st). 

Round 4: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 2 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=40 st).

Round 5: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 3 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=50 st).

Round 6: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 4 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=60 st).

Round 7: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 5 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=70 st).

Round 8: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 6 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=80 st).

Round 9: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 7 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=90 st).

Round 10: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 8 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=100 st).

Round 11: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 9 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=110 st).

Round 12: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), *dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in the next 10 st*, repeat from *to* until end of round, sl st in 1st dc, turn (=120 st).

Do not fasten off.

Basket Sides

Use color A.

Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as st), sc 1 in each st, sl st in top of 1st sc, turn (=120 st).

Repeat round 1 until you have worked 31 rounds.

Fasten off and cut yarn.

Finishing And Assembly


When you have finish crocheting you will have 8 granny squares and the basket. It’s time to assemble the granny square basket.

  1. Using a needle, color A and the whip stitch, seam all squares evenly to the top of the basket. 1 stitch per stitch.
  2. Using the same needle, yarn color A, whip stitch the sides of the granny squares together.
  3. Work 1 round of single crochet around the bottom edge of the granny squares with color A.

Fasten threads & weave in ends.
