The Yarn

Last winter, I designed my first extra-bulky weight beanie and it was such a hit, I knew I wanted to make another.  For this beanie, I really recommend Lion Brand Yarn‘s Wool-Ease Thick and Quick.  It comes in a wide array of colors, from solid colors to variegated colorways. As well as different level of wool-blends, so you’re sure to find a texture and color that works well for your specific desires.  And since it’s an extra-bulky (level 6) yarn, it makes for some really warm and quick makes!

While this yarn is very easy to come by, I did have one tester who has a wool allergy, so if you cannot use or find this yarn, any other extra-bulky weight yarn should work as a nice replacement, just make sure to work a gauge swatch before you begin for the best results.

THE STORY BEHIND IT:  THE LINDEN BEANIE

As I mentioned above, the design for this beanie started out with me wanting to make another beanie in Lion Brand Yarn‘s Wool-Ease Thick and Quick yarn.  Everyone seemed to love my original (the Fireside Beanie- link below) so much, I just couldn’t wait to make another design that was just as quick and detailed to make.  I also knew that I wanted my beanie to have an option for being made in a dual color scheme.  I’ve been swooning over all the beanie patterns being released that feature half one color, half another and couldn’t wait to match some butterscotch and cream colors!

Lastly, I knew that I wanted it to either feature the Sedge stitch or the Seed stitch.  These are two of my all time favorite crochet stitches, and the texture gives such a complex look, while keeping things really simple for beginners.  I had originally made a prototype in the Sedge stitch, but the texture I was hoping for didn’t shine through as much as I had hoped, so I tried it in the Seed stitch.  This worked out even better than I had hoped! But don’t worry- I still got the chance to make a beanie in the Sedge Stitch, in my Elmwood Beanie (link below).

The last decision I had to make was how I wanted the two colors to be separated.  Would I just change colors after the brim, or go for a more even split?  I decided to add a few rounds of the camel stitch for a nice and even line separating the colors, and couldn’t be happier with the end result!  Of course, you could always make your beanie in just one color, and it will still have a stunning effect.

This beanie is so versatile over all.  Since it is worked from the bottom up, you can also make it as well fit, or as slouchy fit as you desire.  The pattern is written for a form-fitting hat, but comes with instructions on adding length if desired.  It’s the perfect hat for all your winter needs, and is sure to keep you warm regardless of how chilly your winters might get.

I hope you all love this beanie as much as I do, and add one (or two) to your beanie wardrobe!

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • This pattern is written for 5 sizes, however size adjustments are suggested under the heading “Size & Measurements”.
  • At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.
  • Separate notes have been added to each size in the body portion of the pattern.  I have color coded each size to try and help distinguish, but make sure to pay extra attention to each size note as you work.
  • I recommend going through and highlighting the numbers associated with the size beanie you are making before you start.
  • When closing the brim, I like to slip stitch my last row to my foundation to prevent the need to cut the yarn.  If you prefer a more invisible seam, you can choose to cut the yarn at the end of the last row and whip stitch to the foundation.  Just make sure to reattach yarn before starting the body portion.
  • With the exception of rounds 2 & 3, every round of the body of this beanie is worked in continuous rounds. I recommend using a stitch marker to keep track of the starting stitch.
  • When changing colors, I recommend using the new color as the last yarn over and pull up of the stitch prior for a more even transition.
  • In round 4, you will work these stitches into the 3rd loops of the half double crochet stitches from round 3.  This will give you 1 more round of camel-looking stitches.

Size Adjustments

  • For a wider circumference: this beanie has an approximate 2” stretch throughout, but if you need a size between those listed you can:  Increase or decrease the amount of rows suggested in the brim pattern and then subsequent stitches of the body, making sure to end up with an odd number of stitches.
  • For a taller or shorter beanie: You can add or decrease the amount of rounds before the decreasing rounds begin.

Abbreviations

We try our best to include all crochet abbreviations in the list above for the crochet pattern, but sometimes we may forget one or two.
