No, crochet and knitting are not the same. Crochet uses a crochet hook which are made up of a handle and a shaft with a hook on the end. While knitting uses knitting needles, at least 2 at a time.

The main tool you need to crochet is a crochet hook and the main material is yarn. However, when crocheting projects you may also use yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, tape measure and fabric.

You don't need any specific yarn to follow crochet tutorials. In general worsted weight yarn or medium-weight and the matching crochet hook given on the yarn label may be a good choice. You can use cotton, wool or acrylic yarn as you please.
