5 Crochet Stitches

You Need to Know

If you're new to crochet, then here are the most basic crochet stitches you should learn first. These stitches are included in a variety of crochet patterns!

The slip knot is the very first thing you will want to learn. You need to set up this yarn loop before you start any crochet project.

1) Slip Knot (Loop)

The “chain” is often shortened to “ch” in crochet patterns. & a row of “chains” (ch); more than one chain, will often be described as a “chain row” or “foundation row”.

2) Chain Stitch (CH)

The crochet stitch you’ll learn in the second part of the beginners guide to crochet is the “Single Crochet” or shortened “sc”.

3) Single Crochet (SC)

As the name suggests it is something in between the single crochet and double crochet, which are also two of the basic crochet stitches.

4) Half Double Crochet (HDC)

It’s one of the most basic crochet stitches. It is also one of the most used. As the name suggests, it is a little more complex than the single crochet.

5) Double Crochet (DC)
