The Lightweight Crochet Shawl is the perfect shawl to wear all year through. It’s a thin and light shawl, but the wool yarn makes it warm.
The decorative stitches makes this a really beautiful shawl, without taking too much attention from your outfit.
To crochet this shawl you’ll only need 1 skein of yarn, so it’s a true one skein wonder. However, since it’s fingering weight weight yarn, it also means a lot of yardage to crochet.
What I love the most about this type of yarn is the fact that it’s a great travel companion. Just 1 skein & lots of crochet opportunity without filling the bag when I travel.

The Yarn
To crochet this variegated yarn crochet pattern I used a yarn from Manos Del Uruguay called Marina.
The yarn is really soft & lovely to work with & it was the soft color changes that made me really want to make the shawl in this yarn.
I’ve linked to the yarn further down in the materials section.

One of my favorite things is to travel, & when I do I always bring a crochet project with me. Usually I don’t only bring one, but multiple.
However, lately I’ve found that grabbing a project that requires thin yarn a good option. It means that the bag I carry on a plane, train ect. doesn’t take up space or weigh a lot.
That’s why I think the lightweight crochet shawl is the perfect travel crochet project. Just one skein needed & multiple hours to crochet.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?
How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?
Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.
It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.
All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.
Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Notes
- This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
- All measurements given are unblocked.
- Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
- Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
- Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
- Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
- This pattern is written for 1 size, however size adjustments are suggested under the heading “Size & Measurements”.
- At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.
- Note that it’s not easy to see the 1st stitch on each row, because you turn & make half double crochet stitches directly, without chains, because of that it’s suggested to use stitch markers on each row. When you start recognizing the pattern, you might find it easier to skip using them.
- The rows with puff stitches will not lay flat while you crochet, but after blocking this will not be a problem.
