How To Crochet The Mosaic Crochet Pillow Cover

The mosaic crochet pillow cover is crocheted in rounds using the mosaic crochet technique and you’ll essentially crochet a tube first.

This means you’ll essentially crochet the front panel and back panel at the same time.

You will crochet a foundation chain long enough to close a loop, then work the mosaic crochet stitch as described below in rounds.

When the tube is finished, you will whip stitch the first side together. Then place the pillow inside and finish it by whip stitching the second side together.

You need to make yourself familiar with the basics of mosaic crochet to follow the pattern.

Yarn For The Crocheted Pillow

For the Mosaic Crochet Pillow Cover Pattern the suggested yarn is a 100 % Acrylic yarn called O’Go Colorama from Caron.

You can substitute yarn for any 5 bulky yarns.

When choosing colors it’s recommended to choose a truly contrasting color for color A to make the stitch pattern show up clearly. Such as the cream combined with darker colors for color B.

For the color B used called “First Blush”, one of the colors (a light grey) that didn’t have enough color wasn’t used.

If you want to substitute with thinner yarns, such as medium weight yarn, make sure to add extra stitches to make it the same size.

Colorful Mosaic Crochet Pillow Pattern

The Mosaic Crochet Pillow Cover creates a lovely throw pillow cover.

When you learn mosaic crochet, it will quickly become one of your favorite techniques.

It’s a fun way to crochet with multiple colors. Like using a solid color, like the white in this project and a color changing yarn as the other.

Since you only use one color at the time, it’s an easy project to crochet.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Crochet Pattern Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • This pattern is written for 1 size, however size adjustments are suggested under the heading “Size & Measurements”.
  • At the end of each round, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.
  • At the beginning of each round, work your first stitch into the first stitch, without starting chains. This will be the in same stitch as the stitch you made your sl st at the end of the previous round if the first stitch is a BLsc.

Techniques used in this crochet pattern

Crocheting in the front and back loop

This means that you will not crochet through the whole stitch as usual. A typical stitch contains two loops. One in the front, nearest you, and another stitch in the back, furthest away from you. One is called the front loop (the one nearest you), the other one the back loop, the one furthest away from you.

For this pattern you will crochet double crochet stitches through the front loop & single crochet stitches (BLsc) through the back loop.

Mosaic Crochet:

To crochet this pattern you will use the mosaic crochet technique, following these 3 simple rules:

  1. You will use color A & color B every other row.
  2. All single crochet stitches are worked in the back loop.
  3. All double crochet stitches (long double crochet/ Ldc) are worked 2 rounds below in the front loop & this front loop are always the same color as the one you’re working with.

Read the Mosaic Crochet Chart

To crochet this pattern you can choose to follow the mosaic crochet chart (starting on round 3), following these rules:

  • Read from the bottom up, from right to left.
  • The yarn color for the round you are going to work are given to the left with letters A and B.
  • The colors in the diagram itself shows how it will look, but don’t pay too much attention to it when working each round. Rather…
  • Crochet single crochet for each empty box, and long double crochet for each box with an “X”.

To finish off, sew the first edge together using the whip stitch.

Lay the tube flat and work corresponding stitches from both sides together.

When the first edge is done, place the pillow inside and repeat on the second edge.

Fasten threads & weave in end.
