How To Crochet The Granny Square Cardigan
The Granny Square Cardigan is made up of multiple granny squares. They are then assembled according to the granny square layout shown in the pattern to create a crochet jacket.
Finally edgings are made around the wrists, lower edge and front.
The stitches used are basic and the granny squares are beginner friendly. Choose if you want to assemble by whip stitches or other methods such as the join as you go or flat slip stitch join.
Yarn For The Crochet Granny Cardigan
To crochet this cardigan I went for the amazing Wool Ease yarn from Lion Brand Yarn.
It’s for sure become my favorite over the last couple of years, with this being the 9th pattern from the last 18 months:
3. Your Afternoon Walk Cardigan
6. Clover Leaf Granny Square Pillow
So if you haven’t tried Wool Ease before, isn’t this great proof that I really LOVE this yarn?
However, if you have some scrap yarn or leftover yarn, you can easily use those to create the granny squares.

If you like crocheting the traditional granny squares, being able to use them in different projects are so great.
They’re so traditional that some even call them the vintage granny. The best thing, is that you may even substitute the traditional granny square with a different square motif, as long as you achieve the same gauge per crochet square.
It’s no secret that I love creating garment patterns & I just had to create a granny square jacket pattern.
It’s also a great addition to your wardrobe.
With some simple edgings, collar & cuff, making the final round of the granny squares the same color, you’ll achieve an overall calmer look.
If you would like to turn this into more of a crochet granny square jacket, like granny square coats, add more rows of granny squares to the body part of this crochet pattern to make it longer. Then optionally add a belt to the waist.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?
How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?
Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.
It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.
All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.
Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.
