It’s another day & another opportunity to share a FREE crochet pattern, the crochet Risum Hat.

This hat crochet pattern was designed with the purpose of using scrap yarn, I’m not talking about “bad” yarn, but yarn that you’ve got just a little of. Piecing together a few colors & then you finally have a great scrap yarn crochet hat.

Hey, I’m not saying you can’t go & buy yarn for this project, or that you can’t make it in one color, just go ahead, it would be just as great!

It’s perfect for winter & rather quick to make.

What more could you need than the crochet Risum hat?

The Yarn

To crochet the Risum hat I used scrap yarn, unfortunately I couldn’t remember the yarn name or brand. I think it’s a really good thing to use scrap yarn when you crochet & you can find more scrap yarn crochet ideas here.

Because of the fact that I didn’t know the yarn brand, I’ve searched for a substitute that works 100 % for this pattern. The final look might be different, but you could also use your own scrap yarn.

If you’d like a substitute, you should try Rowan Felted Tweed Aran.

THE PERFECT SCRAP YARN CROCHET PROJECT

The Risum hat is designed with winter in mind. It’s thick & warm & works well as a hat you’d line with fleece fabric.

While the crochet Risum Hat is a scrap yarn crochet project, it’s also made with Christmas in mind. The crochet hat is definitely a great gift for Christmas. First of all it doesn’t take too long to crochet, but still it has all the details that makes it an interesting gift.

The crochet hat can also be made as a really slouchy hat, & will keep you warm throughout fall & winter season, while still looking good!

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • This pattern is written for 7 sizes, where the numbers for the different sizes is given in parenthesis like this: 12-18 months (18-24 months) 2-5 years (child) teen (woman) man. If just one number is given, it applies to all sizes. I recommend that you highlight or circle the size you’re making before you begin, to make the pattern easier to follow.
  • At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.

Techniques You Will Need

CHANGING COLOR WITH DIFFERENT COLOR ON DIFFERENT ROWS:

When working with different colors on different rows, you’ll never finish the last stitch on the last row with one color, with the color you where working with.

Do all the steps of the stitch, then leave the last step unworked. Yarn over with the color for the next st & pull yarn through.

Repeat this for every row you change colors to make the color changes look beautiful.

This hat is crocheted from the bottom up, with turning rows & is then seamed together.

If you want the same color changes as the hat pictured: Color A is used on row 1-10, color B is used on row 11-16, color C is used on row 17-27.

Ch 66 (70) 74 (78) 82 (86) 90 st.

Row 1: Crochet sc in 3rd ch from hook, continue with sc in all ch, turn (=65 (69) 73 (77) 81 (85) 89 st).

Row 2 – 21 (23) 23 (24) 26 (27) 28: Ch 1, *MFS 1 across the next 4 st* repeat from *to* until end of row, turn (=64 (68) 72 (76) 80 (84) 88 st).

Fasten off & cut yarn.

Finishing

  1. With the wrong side facing. With a needle, seam the side of the beanie.
  2. Still working with the needle, pull through the top of every 4th stitch on the top of the hat with the  same yarn tail, in a way that makes it possible to pull tight after going through those stitches.
  3. Pull tight & fasten thread.
  4. Fasten all threads & weave in ends.
  5. Make a pom-pom if you’d like & sew on.
  6. Sew on fleece fabric to the inside if you wish (How to line a hat).
