How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • This pattern is written for 9 sizes, where the numbers for the different sizes is given in parentheses like this: XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL (4XL) 5XL. If just one number is given, it applies to all sizes. I recommend that you highlight or circle the size you’re making before you begin, to make the pattern easier to follow. Size adjustments are added under “Size & Measurements”.
  • At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.

Size Adjustments

  • Best places to adjust length are:
    • After row 6 before you start decreasing (makes the hip area longer).
    • After row 22 before you start increasing (makes the waist area longer).
    • After row 44 before you start the neck edging (makes it longer bust to shoulder).
  • Ways to adjust width:

Abbreviations

We try our best to include all crochet abbreviations in the list above for the crochet pattern, but sometimes we may forget one or two.

Learn more about crochet abbreviations & find a complete list on our Crochet Abbreviations & Terms post.

Techniques You Will Need

CROCHET IN THE Back LOOP AND FRONT LOOP:

This means that you will not crochet through the whole stitch as usual. A typical stitch contains two loops. One in the front, nearest you, and another loop in the back, furthest away from you. One is called the front loop (the one nearest you), the other one the back loop, the one furthest away from you.

For this pattern you will crochet some stitches in the front loop, some in the back loop and some in the whole stitch.

DECREASE EVENLY:

2 examples:

  • If you’re going to decrease every 8th st you’ll crochet like this:
    • Crochet 6 st, then crochet together the 7th & 8th st, crochet 6 st, then crochet together the 7th & 8th st, then repeat.
  • If your going to decrease alternating every 7th & 8th st, you’ll crochet like this:
    • Crochet 5 st, crochet together the 6th & 7th st, crochet 6 st, crochet together the 7th & 8th st, then repeat.

INCREASE EVENLY:

2 examples:

  • If you’re going to increase every 8th st, you’ll crochet like this:
    • Crochet 8 st, crochet 1 extra st in 8th st, crochet 8 st, crochet 1 extra st in 8th st, then repeat.
  • If your going to increase every 7th & 8th st, you’ll crochet like this:
    • Crochet 7 st, crochet 1 extra st in 7th st, crochet 8 st, crochet 1 extra st in 8th st, then repeat.

ASSEMBLY:

Follow diagram & crochet the t-shirt together. Crochet together the sides (A in diagram), crochet together along the shoulders (B in diagram).

NECK EDGING:

Crocheted with color 1.

Start by attaching the thread to a specific stitch on row 44 on the back of the top between the shoulders. These are the
stitches you skipped when you crocheted the shoulders. You skipped 13 (13) 14 (14) 15 (15) 16 (16) 17 st. You’re going to attach the thread to the back loop on stitch number 6 (6) 6 (6) 7 (7) 7 (7) 8 counting in the direction you crochet.

Row 1: Ch 1 (counts as 1st sc), sc 1 in BLO** of the next 2 (2) 3 (3) 2 (2) 3 (3) 2 st, sc in the whole st of the next 5 (5) 5 (5) 6 (6) 6 (6) 7 st, continue around the edge of the neck edging with sc evenly (approximately 16 st), crochet 1 sc in each of the 13 (13) 14 (14) 15 (15) 16 (16) 17 st you skipped on row 44, continue around the edge of the neck edging on the other side with sc evenly (approximately 16 st), crochet 1 sc in the 5 (5) 5 (5) 6 (6) 6 (6) 7 1st st you skipped from row 44, crochet 1 sc in the FLO*** of the next 3 (3) 4 (4) 3 (3) 4 (4) 3 st, turn (= approximately* 61 (61) 64 (64) 65 (65) 68 (68) 69 st).

Row 2: Ch 1 (counts as 1st sc), ch1 another st (making buttonhole) sc 1 in the whole st of all st from prev row, turn (= approximately 61 (61) 64 (64) 65 (65) 68 (68) 69 st).

Row 3: Ch 1 (counts as 1st sc), sc 1 in the whole st of all st from prev row, turn (= approximately* 61 (61) 64 (64) 65 (65)
68 (68) 69 st).

Fasten off & cut yarn.

*Getting the exact stitch count here isn’t important (that’s why the stitch count is approximately). Rather, try spreading the stitches evenly.

**Back loop stitches makes for an area where you attach the button.

***Front loop stitches on row 2 will create the buttonhole.

SHORT Sleeves

Crocheted with color 1.

Repeat on both sides.

Attach yarn at under arm.

Round 1: Ch 1 (counts as 1st sc), crochet sc evenly around the armhole, sl st in 1st st (=approximately* 46 (50) 54 (56) 58 (63) 66 (70) 72 st).

Round 2: Ch 1 (counts as 1st sc), crochet 1 sc in each st from prev round, sl st 1 in 1st st (=approximately* 46 (50) 54 (56) 58 (63) 66 (70) 72 st).

Round 3: Ch 1 (counts as 1st sc), *crochet 1 sc in each of the next 2 st, crochet sc 2 tog in next 2 st*, repeat from *to* until you have finished 1 round, sl st in 1st st (= approximately* 35 (38) 41 (42) 44 (48) 50 (53) 54 st).

Fasten off & cut yarn.

Finishing

Fasten threads & weave in ends.
